2009 World Taekwondo Tour to be Held in Mexico City on Nov. 14

NBC-1TV World News

The inaugural World Taekwondo Tour will be held in Mexico City, Mexico on Nov. 14, 2009.

The World Taekwondo Tour 2009 Mexico, which will take place at the Palacio de los Deportes, will draw 16 top athletes, mostly Olympic and World Championship medal winners.

The WTF-promoted event is aimed at entertaining spectators and TV viewers by displaying the spectacular techniques of takwondo. The WTF hopes the event can be further developed into professional taekwondo competitions.

The WTF originally planned to hold the event in Mexico City on May 2, 2009, but was put off due to the outbreak of the swine flu.

The one-day event, which has drawn great interest from international media, especially TV, will feature four weight categories: the men’s -58kg, the men’s -68kg, the men’s -80kg, and the women’s -57kg.

Four athletes will compete in each weight division for top prize of U.S.$20,000. The silver medalist will take home $10,000 in prize money, while two bronze-medal winners will earn $5,000.

Competitors in the men’s -58kg weight division are Brazil’s Marcio Ferreira, the silver medalist at the 2005 World Taekwondo Championships; the Dominican Republic’s Gabriel Mercedes, the silver medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games; Mexico’s Damian Villa, the silver medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships; and Spain’s Joel Gonzalez Bonilla, the gold medalist at the 2009 World taekwondo Championships.

In the men’s -68kg weight category, Iran’s Mohammad Bagheri, the gold medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships will compete for top honors with Mexico’s Idulio Islas, the silver medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships; Germany’s Daniel Manz, the silver medalist at the 2008 CISM Championships; and Canada’s Maxim Potvin, the silver medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships.

The United States’ Steven Lopez, the gold medalist both at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, and the five-time champion at the World Taekwondo Championships, will vie for the top honors in the men’s -80kg weight division with Great Britain’s Aaron Cook, the gold medalist at the 2008 World Junior Taekwondo Championships and the fifth placer at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games; Iran’s Farzad Abdolahi, the quarterfinalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships; and Korea’s Jung-ho Park, the gold medalist at the 2004 Asia Taekwondo Championships.

In the women’s -57kg weight category, Korea’s Su-jeong Lim, the gold medalist both at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships, will compete with the United States’ Diana Lopez, the bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games; Spain’s Andrea Rica Taboada, the bronze medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships; and Guatemala’s Euda Carias Morales, the bronze medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships.

The WTF Competition Rules will apply to the inaugural World Taekwondo Tour 2009 Mexico, with some modifications. A single elimination tournament system will be applied.

Electronic body protectors and an instant video replay system will not be introduced to the event and there will be no protest process. The fourth sudden-death round will be held with no time limit until the winner is decided by golden point.

Rules on valid points may be modified to encourage the athletes to attempt more spectacular techniques.

The 10-second rule will be strictly applied. Under the strict 10-second rule, each contestant inactive for 10 seconds after the last execution of techniques will be given a 10-second violation penalty and if a contestant receives four 10-second violation penalties, the concerned contestant will be disqualified from the contest and declared as a loser.

The opening ceremony of the World Taekwondo Tour 2009 Mexico will begin at 4 p.m. on Nov. 14, with the semifinal and final matches scheduled for 5 p.m and 7 p.m., respectively.
