Denmark, Chinese Taipei Clinch 1 Gold Medal Each on 2nd Day of World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Incheon

Denmark and Chinese Taipei grabbed one gold medal each on the second day of the 2nd WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Incheon, west of Seoul, on Nov. 5, 2007.

Korea reaffirmed its supremacy in taekwondo poomsae as it won eight out of 10 gold medals up for grabs on the second day of the three-day event, which took place at the Incheon World Gymnasium. Turkey won four silvers and one bronze medal, followed by Iran which clinched two silver and three bronzes.

There was a special demonstration of new styles of poomsae, “Hanryu” and “Beekack,” which were jointly produced by the WTF, the Kukkiwon and the Korea Taekwondo Associaqtion. The demonstration, which was broadcast live by KBS-N, drew great interest among participants in the event.

In the men’s individual 1st master division (those between 41 years old and 50 years old), Denmark’s Ky-Tu Dang outpointed Korean Jong-beom Park to grab the gold medal. Mr. Dang, who clinched the silver medal at the inaugural WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Seoul in 2006, earned a total of 57.9 points, compared with Mr. Park’s 56.8 points. Mr. Park was the gold medalist at the inaugural WTF World Poomsae Championships.

The bronze medal went to Iran’s Hosseinali Zarigharehchomagh, and France’s Nguyen Ngnoc Thanh in the same category.

In the women’s individual 2nd master category (over 51 years old), Chinese Taipei’s Jui-Hsiang Tseng earned her country the first gold medal in the WTF World Poomsae Championships.

The silver went to Turkey’s Sevgican Yalcin in the same division, while Australia’s Browyn Butterworth and the United States’ Noreen Thackrey shared the bronze medal.

As part of its efforts to further promote taekwondo poomsae worldwide, Korea decided not to send its players to the women’s individual 2nd master category, along with the women’s 2nd team and the women’s pair divisions. Korea swept all 16 golds at the 1st WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.

Korea finished first place in the eight categories that day – the men’s individual 1st senior, the women’s individual 2nd senior, the women’s individual 1st senior, the men’s individual junior, the women’s individual junior, the men’s 1st team, the women’s 1st team, and the men’s 2nd team.

In the men’s individual 1st senior division, Korea’s Bo-hyeon Kim won the gold, while Iran’s Ali Salmani Azarkhavrani grabbed the silver. The bronze was shared by Vietnam’s Nguyen Dinh Toan and Russia’s Ligay Stanislav.

In the women’s individual 2nd senior category (between 31 and 40), Korea’s Nam-jeong Song finished first, followed by Spain’s Josefina Lopez Perez. The bronze went to Germany’s Afshar Roya and France’s Kocheida Leila.

In the women’s individual 1st senior category (between 19 and 30), Korea’s Jin-young Ahn earned her country the gold medal, while Turkey’s Rabia Kim grabbed the silver. Spain’s Laura Kim and Australia’s Kyung-eun Yang shared the bronze in the division.

In the men’s individual junior division (between 14 and 18), Korea’s Yeon-haeng Kim won the gold, while the silver went to Spain’s Juan Miguel Gomez. The bronze was shared by Iran’s Beheshti Hossein and Chinese Taipei’s Hung-Ting Kuo.

In the women’s individual junior division (between 14-18), Korea’s Seul-bi Lee won the gold, while Spain’s Vanesa Leon Pujola clinched the silver. The bronze went to Japan’s Kawashima Sayo and Mexico’s Ollin Yoliztlin Medina.

In the men’s 1st team division (between 14-35), a trio of Koreans (Se-hoon Jeong, Yong-seok Lee, and Dong-hun Park) won the gold medal. The silver went to Iran (Alinadali Najafabadi, Akbar Forouzan, Hamid Nazarigharehchomagh). The bronze was shared by Chinese Taipei (Hung-Ting Kuo, Hung-Chan Chiang, Ming-Yuan Chang) and Turkey (Volkan Yalcinkaya, Ibrahim Ucan, Adil Tekin).

In the women’s 1st team division (between 14 and 35), the gold went to Korea (Kyeong-suk Kim, Na-yeon Lee, Cho-rong Hwang), while Turkey (Elif Soyturk, S. Olgun Bektasoglu, Selin Sengul) won the silver. The bronze went to China (Liu Yi-Ying, Li Wen, He Xiao-Yan) and Chinese Taipei (Ya-Yu Huang, Pei-Yun Huang, Pei-Han Huang).

In the men’s 2nd team category (over 36 years old), a trio of Koreans (Hyung-jun Noh, Jae-yoon Ahn, Myung-oh Lee) clinched the gold medal, while Turkey (Mustafa Yilmaz, Zeynel Celik, Murat Ezen) grabbed the silver. The bronze went to Iran (Morteza Esteki, Ali Barzegari, Shahram Allahabady) and Spain (Bernardo Fioalgo Perez, Diego Carillo Carrasco, Juan Antonio Santiago Bueno).

A total of five golds are up for grabs on the final day of the World Poomsae Championships on Nov. 6.
