Russia, Spain Win 2 Olympic Tickets Each on 1st Day of European Qualification Tournament

NBC-1TV World News

[By WTF/NBC-1TV]Host Russia and Spain clinched two tickets each to the taekwondo competition of the 2012 London Olympic Games on the opening day of the European Qualification Tournament at the Palace of Martial Arts 'Ak Bars’ in Kazan, Russia, on Jan. 27, 2012.

Germany and Sweden won one Olympic ticket each at the three-day qualification tournament, which drew a total of 120 athletes from 39 countries.

The openig day featured two weight categories: the men's -58kg and the women's -49kg. On the first day of competition, host Russia won two tickets to London, acquiring a maximum four quota places in total. This is the largest number of places that it has gained in its Olympic taekwondo history. Russia won two places in the men’s over 80kg and the women’s over 67kg at the WTF World Qualification Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2011. It sent two athletes to the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympic Games each, while none of Russian athletes made it for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Alexey Denisenko of Russia beat the incumbent world champion, Joel Gonzalez of Spain, in the men’s under 58kg division to take the first place, drawing enthusiastic applause from his home fans. Kristina Kim defeated Ganna Soroka of Ukraine by 8-4 in the women’s under 49kg division and grabbed the ticket to London.

Spain and Germany newly joined the group of qualifiers for London 2012. Spain won two quota places, shedding bad memories in Baku in which it had failed to win any place. Brigida Yague in the women’s -49kg won the gold medal, while Joel Gonzalez grabbed the silver medal.

Sumeyye Manz of Germany took the 2nd place in the women’s under 49kg weight category and became the first athlete qualified for the London 2012.

Uno Sanli of Sweden beat Andrei Rotaru of Moldova for the 3rd place in the men’s under 58kg, gaining one more ticket to London for his country. Sweden gained one place in the women’s under 67kg division at the World Qualification Tournament in Baku (click here to see today’s competition results )
