English Libraries Use the Lexile Measure to Achieve Significant Improvements in Reading Skills

NBC-1TV World News

[By NBC-1TV E. H Kim]For the last two years, Mrs. A has been sending her ten year old daughter to an English library near home, and has been pleased to observe the improvements in her child’s English ability. Mrs. A was able to track her daughter’s steady development as a reader through the Lexile Measure, received as part of the English reading level assessment test (level test) that she takes at the English library.

As in the case of Mrs. A, an increasing number of parents in Korea are using Lexile Measures, provided through reading level tests administered at English libraries, to choose English books appropriate for their children’s level. This is because the majority of English libraries rely on the Lexile Measure to provide guidance for their English readers. Mrs. A, who also enjoys reading in English with her daughter at home, observed that her daughter seems to take more pleasure in reading and has achieved marked improvement in her English skills ever since she began selecting books based on her child’s own interests and her reading level indicated by the Lexile Measure.

Since 2009, as greater emphasis began to be placed on English education, numerous English libraries catering mainly to elementary and middle school students have opened across the country. These libraries take various forms, ranging from municipal and district English libraries established by local government organizations to private English libraries set up independently by English tutoring institutes or churches, etc. Although accurate statistics are not yet available, it is estimated that there are now around 100 English libraries in Korea nationwide.

The majority of these English libraries operates membership-based English reading programs and is leading the boom in English reading study among children and adolescents. The lexile measure is adopted by many of these English libraries to achieve significant improvement in English reading skills for students who wish to participate in their English reading programs.

9 out of the 10 libraries that participated in this survey, including Busan Municipal English Library, Sacheon English Library, Mapo English Library, and Yangcheon English Library, provide Lexile Measures for the benefit of their members.

The Lexile Measure is a quantified measure of reading ability designed to help readers choose English texts corresponding to their skill levels. Students in 165 countries around the world receive Lexile Measure assessments and in the United States in particular, more than 30 million American students across all fifty states use this measure for more effective English reading.

The Lexile measure of a reader describes his or her skill on the Lexile scale, which ranges from below 200L to above 1600L. Beginning readers and texts measure at the lowest levels, while advanced readers and texts measure 1300L and up.

Director Y of the “Yangcheon English Library” established by the Yangcheon district in Seoul provides adequate explanations regarding the purpose of the Lexile Measure in advance and emphasizes to parents that the scores are irrelevant to academic performance. The Yangcheon library has 30,000 English books available, and uses the Lexile Measure to label around one third of its book collection in order to operate individually customizable English reading programs corresponding to the students’ Lexile Measures. The library recommends lists of books according to a student’s Lexile Measure and encourages them to engage in reading steadily.

In the case of the Busan Municipal English Library, the first of its kind to open in Korea, the Lexile Measure has been used to achieve excellent results in the library’s English reading program. Ms. K, who is in charge of the library’s English reading program called “Reading Star,” said that eleven out of fifteen students who participated in level test at steady two-month intervals demonstrated significant improvement over the course of the last three years. At this English library, around 150 readers including adults participate in level test each month.

Dr. Malbert Smith III, joint CEO of MetaMetrics, stated that he was “very glad that English libraries in Korea are offering English reading programs using the Lexile Measure” and that “the Lexile Measure is an essential tool for effective English reading,” expressing his confidence that “the Lexile Measure will contribute significantly to improving Koreans’ English abilities if used properly.”
