NBC-1TV World News

[NBC-1TV]A total of 128 athletes from a record 64 countries are ready for the taekwondo competition of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, which will kick off on Aug. 20 for a four-day run.

They will vie for 32 medals in eight weight categories, four divisions each for men and women, at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) Gymnasium in Beijing, China.

Sixteen athletes will compete in each weight category.

Twenty-four medals were up for grabs in the taekwondo competition at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Each competition day will feature two weight categories, one for men and one for women. The opening day will feature the men’s -58kg and the women’s -49kg category; the second day. the men’s -68kg and the women’s -57kg; the third day, the men’s -80kg and the women’s -67kg; and the final day, the men’s +80kg and the women’s +67kg.

Of the 64 countries qualified for the taekwondo competition at the Beijing Olympic Games through world and five continental qualification tournaments, or Tripartite Commission invitation places, 18 countries will participate in the Olympic Games taekwondo competition for the first time.

They are Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Belize, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru, Portugal, Switzerland, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Niger, and Senegal.

Host China automatically earned four berths for the taekwondo competition, while four Tripartite Commission invitation places, better known as wild cards, went to Afghanistan, Belize, Niger, and the United Arab Emirates.

A total of 103 athletes from 51 countries competed in the taekwondo competition at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, while 124 athletes from 60 countries participated in the 2005 Athens Olympic taekwondo competition.

Seven athletes will participate in the Beijing Olympic taekwondo competition for the third consecutive time. They are Steven Lopez of the United States, Hadi Saei Bonehkohal of Iran, Alexandros Nikolaidis of Greece, Angel Matos of Cuba, Yoriko Okamoto of Japan, Adriana Carmona of Venezuela, Chen Zhong of China.

Of the 128 taekwondo athletes, the youngest is Ms. Khaoula Ben Hamza of Tunisia at the age of 17 years and 3 months, while the oldest is Yoriko Okamoto of Japan at the age of 36 years and 11 months.

The duration of a taekwondo contest is three rounds of two minutes with one minute rest between rounds. In the event of a tied score after the third round, a fourth round of two minutes, also known as the sudden death round, will be conducted after a minute of rest following the third round.

When a contestant scores the first round in the sudden death round, he or she will be declared the winner. In the event of a tied score after the end of the sudden death round, the winner shall be decided based on a decision of superiority by all refereeing officials for the initiatives shown in the sudden death round.

Each weight category consists of a single elimination tournament. The winner of the final match receives the gold medal and the loser of the final receives the silver medal.

Losers of the finalists from all phases have a “second chance,” and they compete in the repechage, where the winner of each pool is awarded with one bronze medal.

The losers of the semifinals are seeded directly to the repechage bronze medal contests, where they will meet with the winners of the previous repechage phases, but from the other pool. Contestants who lost before the semifinals will meet in the repechage rounds with other losers from the same pool. The winners of each repechage contest advance and the losers are eliminated.

Meanwhile, the WTF has produced a WTF brochure, a media kit and a promotional video for distribution to international media and global sports leaders, as well as 188 WTF member national associations on the occasion of the Beijing Olympic taekwondo competition.
