[By NBC-1TV H. J Yook]A total of 24 countries earned at least one qualification place for the taekwondo competition at the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, after one day of competition at the WTF YOG Qualification Tournament in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei on March 20, 2014.
Out of 36 qualification places up for grabs on the first day of the two-day qualification tournament, which was held at the Taipei Arena, Egypt won three tickets.
Ten countries clinched two qualification places. They are host Chinese Taipei, France, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Colombia, Germany, Turkey, Russia, Belgium and Iran.
A total of 13 countries grabbed one qualification ticket. They are Canada, Morocco, Slovenia, Romania, Poland, Mexico, Sweden, Croatia, Thailand, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan, Argentina, and Malaysia.
Through the qualification tournament, a total of 74 qualification places, 37 for males and 37 for females, will be selected. The qualification places obtained for the Youth Olympic Games will be allocated to the pertinent National Olympic Committee.
Out of a total of 100 places for the taekwondo competition at the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, the host country of China automatically earned six places, three for men and three for women, and the remaining 20 are the universal places, better known as wild cards. The host country is not participating in the qualification tournament.
An NOC may enter in the qualification tournament a maximum of three male and three female athletes, with one athlete per weight category. The tournament features 10 weight categories, five each for men and women. China has decided to field one female athlete each to the women's -49kg, -63kg and +63kg divisions, and one male each to the men's -63kg, -73kg and +73kg categories.
The first day of the WTF Qualification Tournament for the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games featured five weight categories: junior male -48kg, male -73kg, male +73kg, female -49kg and female -63kg.
In the junior female -49kg weight category, Belgium's Indra Craen needed a fourth golden-point round to beat host Chinese Taipei's Huai Hsuan Huang in the final match for the gold medal. The bronze went to Poland's Patrycja Adamkiewicz and Azerbaijan's Safiye Polat. The other three who won the qualification place are Mexico's Mitzi Carrillo, Turkey's Zehra Dosucukur and Sweden's Patricia Striner.
In the junior male -73kg division, Ukraine's Iurii Savenko outpointed Azerbaijan's Said Guliyev 7-6 in the final match to earn his country the gold medal. In the category, Canada's Keven Saint Jean and Egypt's Seif Eissa shared the gold medal.
The other three who won the qualification place are Colombia's Jeisson Serrano, Germany's Hamza Adnan-Karim and Morocco's Mohamed El Attari.
In the junior male +73kg category, Turkey's Talha Bayram clinched the gold medal as his final-match counterpart, Ukraine's Denys Voronovskyy, received an accumulated eight warnings. The bronze went to Egypt's Youssef Khallaf and France's Yoann Miangue. The other three who clinched the qualification ticket are Slovenia's Lucijan Kobal, Romania's Zsolt Feher and Russia's Emil Khadeev.
In the junior female -63kg division, Croatia's Matea Jelic earned her country the gold medal as she defeated Iran's Mahsa Jeddi 16-4 with a 12-point gap in the third round. Colombia's Debbie Natalia Yopasa and Russia's Yulia Turutina shared the bronze medal in the same division. The other three who earned their respective countries a qualification place are Belgium's Amber Pannemans, Malaysia's Mohana Mariappen and Egypt's Maisoun Farouk.
In the junior male -48kg category, Thailand's Tawin Hanprab needed a fourth golden-point round to beat Iran's Mohammad Aslani for the gold medal. Host Chinese Taipei's Chen Yu Wang and Kazakhstan's Galymzhan Serikbay earned their countries the bronze medal. The other four who earned their respective countries a qualification ticket are the Netherlands' Machario Patti, Argentina's Ezequiel Navarro, France's Stephane Audibert and Germany's Daniel Chiovetta.
The second and final day of the qualification tournament will feature the remaining five weight categories: junior male -55kg, male -63kg, female -44kg, female -55kg and female +63kg.
