China, Spain Grab 1 Gold Medal Each at World Taekwondo Championships

2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships

[By NBC-1TV H. J Yook]China and Spain won one gold medal each on the second day of the 2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships in Gyeongju, China on May 2, 2011.

China’s Wu Jingyu, the gold medal winner both at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, brushed aside a stiff challenge from Chinese Taipei’s Yang Shu Chun, the bronze medalist at the 2010 Asian Taekwondo Championships, to clinch the gold medal in the women’s -49kg weight category. Wu won the final match 6-2.

Wu, the bronze medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships, advanced to the final match as she came from behind to beat Spain’s Brigida Yague, the gold medalist at the 2003, 2007 and 2009 World Taekwondo Championships, 5-4 in a semifinal match.

Chinese Taipei’s Yang, who reached the final match with a 10-1 victory over Morocco’s Atabrour, told journalists shortly after the match, “I am satisfied with the results as I have trained just for one month. If I have the chance to compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games, I will do my best for the best performance.”

For Yang, it was her first international championships appearance following her three-month suspension by the World Taekwondo Federation last December for wearing extra electronic sensors in her socks. At the press conference, Yang expressed her special thanks for the encouragement and support by the Korean people.

The bronze medal in the women’s division went to Spain’s Brigida Yague and Morocco’s Sanaa Atabrour in the division.

The 2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships kicked off on May 1 at the Gyeongju Indoor Gymnasium in Gyeongju, Korea for a six-day run. The championships drew about 1,700 athletes and officials from a record 149 countries.

For the first time ever at the WTF World Championships, all semifinal and final matches of each weight division take place between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the following day.

In the men’s -58kg weight division, Spain’s Joel Gonzalez, the gold medalist at the 2009 Copenhagen World Taekwondo Championships, defeated Portugal’s Rui Braganca, the gold medalist at the 2010 Dutch Open, 4-1 in the final for the gold medal.

The Dominican Republic’s Yulis Gabriel Mercedes Reyes and Chinese Taipei’s Wei Chen Yang, the gold medalist at the 2010 Asian Games and the silver medal winner at the 2010 Asian Championships, shared the bronze medal in the men’s category.

Mercedes Reyes advanced to the final as he came from behind to beat his semifinal match opponent, Chinese Taipei’s Wei, 3-1.

All the semifinal and final matches were broadcast live, and the WTF showed all the matches live through its WTF Taekwondo WEB TV on the WTF Web site. The live Internet broadcasting time was GMT 5:15 – 6:45 on May 2, 2011.

The remaining live WTF WEB broadcasting time are as follows: GMT 5:15-6:45 on May 3; GMT 5:15-6:45 on May 4; GMT 5:15-6:45 on May 6; and GMT 5:15-6:45 on May 6.

A day earlier on May 1, there was an opening ceremony of the 2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships at the competition venue.

The opening ceremony drew Korean Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Byoung Gug Choung, Jun-pyo Hong, president of the Korean Taekwondo Association; Gwan-yong Gim, governor of North Gyeongsang Province; and Yang-sik Choi, mayor of Gyeongju.

“The 2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships have attracted a record number of countries. The WTF family grew to an astounding 197 member nations,” said WTF President Chungwon Choue in his opening remarks at the opening ceremony.

Dr. Choue said, “As we continue to grow, it could not be a better time to reach out to our brothers and sisters around the world to better serve humanity … to serve each other.”

“This year’s theme World Peace through Taekwondo aims to stretch out our hands to offer help and hope to those in need around the world in orphanages and refugee camps,” he said. “The beginnings of these efforts can already be seen in Thailand and Guatemala, where the national taekwondo governing bodies have worked to bring the spirit of taekwondo and Olympism to youth in orphanages. It is my hope that more work like this can be done in other countries.”

At the end of the opening ceremony, a five-member team competition between Korea and Russia was held to show the world the dynamic taekwondo.

The special event, which lasted about 11 minutes, including a five-minute first half and another five-minute second half, with a one-minute break, drew special attention from both spectators and the international media. You can see the whole team match at the WTF Youtube.
