Thailand, Turkey, China Win 1 Gold Medal Each on Day 4 of World Taekwondo Championships

2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships

[By NBC-1TV H. J Yook]Thailand, Turkey and China grabbed one gold medal each on the fourth day of the 2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships in Gyeongju, Korea on May 4, 2011.

After four days of competition, China topped others in the overall medal tally in the women's division with two gold medals and one silver, followed by Great Britain and Croatia with one gold and one silver. In the men’s division, Turkey and Iran both ranked first with one gold and one silver, followed by Spain with one gold and Afghanistan with one silver.

In the women’s -57kg weight category, China’s Hou Yuzhuo, the gold medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships, needed a fourth sudden-death round to clinch the gold medal against Great Britain’s Jade Louise Jones, the gold medal winner at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Hou, the silver medal winner at the 2004 World Junior Taekwondo Championships, reached the final match as she beat Korea’s Su-jeong Lim, the gold medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, 5-1.

The bronze medal in the women’s division went to Korea’s Lim and France’s Mariene Harnois.

In the women’s -62kg final match, Thailand’s Rangsiya Nisaisom, who participated in the 2010 Asian Games, defeated Croatia’s Marina Sumic, the gold medal winner at the 2010 European Taekwondo Championships, 3-1 to earn her country the gold medal. NIsaisom advanced to the final match with a 4-1 victory over Turkey’s Durdane Altunel, the silver medalist at the 2010 Spanish Open.

Turkey’s Altunel and Canada’s Karine Sergerie shared the bronze medal in the women’s division.

In the men’s -68kg final match, Turkey’s Servet Tazegul, the gold medalist at the 2010 European Taekwondo Championships, brushed aside a stiff challenge from Iran’s Mohammad Bagheri Motamed, the gold medal winner at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships, to clinch the gold medal. Tazegul won the match 9-8.

Tazegul, the gold medalist at the 2010 European Taekwondo Championships, reached the final match with a 15-2 victory over Great Britain’s Stamper, the gold medalist at the 2010 German Open.
