Bharat Light & Power Selects OSIsoft PI System to Support Renewable Energy Growth in India

[By NBC-1TV H. J Yook] Bharat Light & Power (BLP), a leading renewable energy producer in India, today announced the full deployment of its state-of-the-art remote monitoring platform, powered by the OSIsoft PI System™. The platform, which is currently implemented across all existing wind farms throughout the country with a combined capacity of 200 megawatts, is already improving the operating productivity of BLP’s wind power projects, and over the next 10 years, will support the development of new, reliable, clean energy capacity across the country.

OSIsoft, LLC and BLP launched a strategic engagement in November 2013, and together, the companies will extend BLP’s use of the PI System to deliver a cloud-based data collection, analysis and management platform for all future wind-energy projects BLP develops within India.

“We wanted a solution that was best-in-class around the world—no compromises. We evaluated all of the available options and in the end, we selected the OSIsoft PI System,” says Balki Iyer, Director of Development for BLP. “I’m excited that we found a great partner in OSIsoft to accompany us on our journey.”

BLP will also leverage the PI System to introduce a new service offering for owners of wind farms around the world. This service is a key growth initiative for BLP, which was founded in 2010 by Tejpreet Singh Chopra, former CEO of GE India, to help the country meet its growing energy needs with renewable resources.

“The PI System is an important tool for companies that want to tie operational performance to key business objectives,” says Brett Higgins, Vice President, Asia Pacific. “We’re thrilled to see BLP taking advantage of the robust real-time data capabilities and advanced analysis tools available in the PI System to help meet its environmental and economic performance goals.”

Delivering reliable clean energy is a critical concern for India. The country is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gas emissions, ranking third behind the U.S. and China. As the Indian economy continues to grow, its energy needs are increasing too. “India has a conundrum — we are one of the top carbon-emitting countries, but there are many people that don’t have basic power,” says Balki. “That’s a key motivator for us to say, can we scale renewable energy here?”

BLP has a robust pipeline of renewable projects in Wind, Solar and Hydro and aims to operate 1 gigawatt of clean, renewable energy projects by 2015. The new service offering will allow the company to extend its expertise in effective renewable energy generation management to projects owned and operated by other companies, as well.

“Today, we live in a world that is very social, mobile and local,” Balki says. “We want to offer a platform where we create situational awareness for our customers — where centralized intelligence can be translated in a very local way.”
