[By NBC-1TV H. J Yook]An adopted fencer is participating in the Gwangju U-Games even as he continues his fight against cancer.

Australia fencing national team athlete Simon Andrew is a student at the University of Sydney.

Simon is an ethnic Taiwanese who was adopted by his Australian foster parents when he was 6 months old. However, he was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer inside of his right arm at the age of 9 while he was enjoying rugby, wrestling and other dynamic sports.

He had to stop many sports activities while undergoing three cancer surgeries, but he found in fencing a sport he could enjoy with just an arm. However, he also had to try much harder than others because he can use only one arm.

As a result, Simon distinguished himself as he was ranked 32nd at the Asia Senior Championship in 2013 reached the quarterfinals at the Asian Championship for under-20s. Finally he was selected to the Australian team and got a chance to participate in the Gwangju Universiade.

Simon said that fencing is the best happiness in his life. He can't imaginate existence without fencing, and will try his best to focus on the rest of the games.
