내용은 지난 5월 18일(현지시간) 미국 백악관 앞 잔디밭에서 펼쳐진 '한미 동맹 72주년 기념' 행사 주관자로서 당시 참석했던 관계자들에 대한 감사함과 태권도에 대한 애정이 담긴 글이다. 한글과 영문으로 작성된 최응길 국기원 워싱턴 D.C., 버지니아 지부장 기고문은 다음과 같다.
자랑스러운 태권도인 여러분께
사랑하는 태권도 가족 여러분!
그 어느 때보다도 벅차고 감격스러운 마음으로 이 글을 씁니다. 지난 2025년 5월 18일, 한미 동맹 72주년을 기념하여 "한국과 미국의 한마음", "태권도인의 한마음"을 기치로 워싱턴 D.C. 백악관 앞마당에서 열린 ‘태권도 한마음 축제’는 말 그대로 감동과 환희의 한마당이었습니다.
이 뜻깊은 행사에 고국에서 함께해 주신 이동섭 국기원 원장님을 비롯한 내외빈 여러분과 국기원 태권도 시범단 및 관계자 여러분, 미국 전역에서 바쁘신 가운데도 기꺼이 참여해 주신 태권도 원로님들과 관계자 여러분께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 관장님들의 지도 아래 참석해 주신 관원 여러분 한 분 한 분께 깊은 감사의 인사를 드립니다.
예상을 훨씬 뛰어넘어 2,000명이 넘는 태권도인 여러분의 참여는 단순한 수치를 넘어, 태권도의 정신과 위상을 다시금 확인시켜 주는 위대한 증거였습니다.
함께 모여 뿜어낸 열정과 에너지는 백악관 앞 푸른 잔디밭을 가득 채웠고, 우리 모두의 가슴에는 자긍심과 벅찬 감동이 차올랐습니다. 태권도인으로서의 자부심이 다시 한번 새겨지며 대서사시를 이루었습니다.
이 모든 성과는 각자의 위치에서 묵묵히 땀 흘려 주신 태권도인 여러분의 진심과 헌신이 있었기에 가능했습니다. 부족한 준비에도 불구하고 흔들림 없이 자리를 지켜주신 사범님들, 수련생들, 그리고 부모님들과 자원봉사자 여러분의 헌신이 있었기에 이번 행사는 성대하게 마무리될 수 있었습니다.
무엇보다 태권도라는 이름 하나로 국적, 언어, 연령을 뛰어넘어 하나로 연결된 우리는, 다시 한번 태권도가 단순한 스포츠를 넘어 세계적인 문화이자 정신이라는 사실을 실감할 수 있었습니다.
태권도는 ‘나를 이기고, 세상을 이롭게 하라’는 정신을 바탕으로, 수련을 통해 자신을 극복하고 공동체와 더불어 살아가는 길을 제시하는 무예입니다.
이번 축제에서 우리는 그 정신을 실천하고, 전 세계에 그 가치를 당당히 보여주었습니다.
또한 태권도는 한국 고유의 무예에서 출발하여 오늘날에는 세계인이 즐기고 사랑하는 올림픽 스포츠로 발전했습니다. 이번 행사에 보여주신 참여와 열정은 태권도가 세계 속의 문화유산이자 정신적 지주임을 다시 한번 확인시켜 주었습니다.
국기원이 주최하고 워싱턴 D.C. 버지니아 지부가 주관한 이번 한마음 축제는 미국 정부의 지원과 언론 보도 속에서 더욱 주목을 받았으며, 이는 태권도에 대한 세계인의 관심을 다시 한번 환기시키는 계기가 되었습니다. 이 뜻깊은 성과는 단지 일회성 행사가 아닌, 태권도의 미래를 향한 중요한 이정표라고 생각합니다.
존경하는 태권도 가족 여러분!
이제 우리의 여정은 끝난 것이 아니라 더 큰 도약을 위한 시작입니다. 2025년 7월 17일부터 19일까지 LA 애너하임 컨벤션센터에서 열리는 ‘태권도 한마당 대회’가 바로 그 다음 여정입니다.
우리의 한마음은 워싱턴에서 모은 감동과 열정을 애너하임에서 더욱 뜨겁게 이어 나갈 수 있을 것입니다.
저 또한 태권도인으로서, 그리고 이번 행사를 함께한 동료로서, 진정한 세계 태권도로 거듭나기 위한 길에 최선의 노력을 다할 것을 약속드립니다.
다시 한 번, 이번 축제에 함께해 주신 모든 분들께 깊은 감사의 마음을 전하며, 축제 준비를 위해 도장 운영 등 현실적으로 어려운 여건 속에서도 물심양면으로 애쓰신 국기원 워싱턴 D.C. 버지니아 지부 임원 관계자 여러분의 열정에 커다란 감동과 자부심을 가지게 되었고 깊은 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.

To proud Taekwondo people.
Dear Taekwondo family,
I am writing this article with more overwhelming and thrilling heart than ever. On May 18, 2025, to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the ROK-US alliance, the 'Taekwondo Hanmaum Festival' held in the front yard of the White House in Washington, D.C., was literally a venue of emotion and joy under the banner of "One Heart of Korea and the United States" and "One Heart of Taekwondo People." I would like to express my deep gratitude to Lee Dong-seop, the director of Kukkiwon, and other domestic and foreign guests, as well as the Kukkiwon Taekwondo Demonstration Team and officials, who were willing to participate in this meaningful event even though they were busy throughout the United States. I would like to express my deep gratitude to each of the officials who attended under the guidance of the directors.
Beyond expectations, your participation, which is far more than 2,000 Taekwondo people, was a great testament to the spirit and status of Taekwondo, beyond mere figures.
The passion and energy that gathered together filled the green lawn in front of the White House, and pride and overwhelming emotion filled the hearts of all of us. Once again, my pride as a taekwondo person was engraved, creating an epic poem.
All of these achievements were made possible by the sincerity and dedication of Taekwondo people who worked silently in their respective positions.
The event was able to end in a grand manner thanks to the dedication of the masters, trainees, parents and volunteers who kept their seats without wavering despite the lack of preparation.
Above all, we, who are connected to one by the name of Taekwondo, across nationality, language, and age, were able to realize once again that Taekwondo is a global culture and spirit beyond just a sport.
Taekwondo is a martial art that suggests a way to overcome oneself and live with the community through training based on the spirit of "Beating Me, Benefiting the World." At this festival, we practiced that spirit and proudly showed its value to the world.
Taekwondo also started from Korea's unique martial arts and has evolved into an Olympic sport that is enjoyed and loved by people around the world today.
The participation and passion shown in this event confirmed once again that Taekwondo is a cultural heritage and spiritual pillar in the world.
Hosted by Kukkiwon and organized by the Virginia branch of Washington, D.C., the Hanmaum Festival received more attention amid support from the U.S. government and media coverage, which once again sparked the world's interest in Taekwondo.
I think this meaningful achievement is not just a one-time event, but an important milestone towards the future of Taekwondo.
Dear Taekwondo family,
Now our journey is not over, but the beginning for a greater leap forward. The next journey is the Taekwondo Hanmadang Competition, which will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Los Angeles from July 17 to 19, 2025. Our hearts will be able to continue the emotion and passion gathered in Washington even more hotly in Anaheim.
As a taekwondo person and a colleague who participated in this event, I promise to do my best on the path to becoming a true world taekwondo person.
Once again, I would like to express my deep gratitude to everyone who has been with me at this festival, and I am very impressed and proud of the passion of the executives of the Virginia branch of the Kukkiwon Washington, D.C., who worked both materially and mentally despite practically difficult conditions such as the operation of the studio to prepare for the festival.
